Meen Vevichathu / Kottayam Style Fish Curry

 

                                          
Yum Meen Vevichathu

Ingredients

Fish- 1kg (any fish you can use to prepare this curry)
Shallots sliced - 1/2 cup 
Coconut oil -as required
 Kokum-soaked in water 3 to 4 pieces 
 Ginger- 1 tablespoon  crushed
Garlic -crushed -1 tablespoon 
Chilli powder  2- 3 tablespoon
Turmeric powder-  1/4 teaspoon
Coriander powder- 1/2 tablespoon( optional) 
Fenugreek - 1/2 teaspoon 
Mustard seeds- 1/2 teaspoon
Curryleaves
Salt- to taste 
Water -3  1/2 cup 

Method 

Mix chili powder, turmeric powder and coriander powder with little water and grind to a fine paste. Take a  manchatti or clay pot and heat oil in it.
Splutter mustard seeds and fenugreek and curryleaves . Add Shallots, and saute till it becomes brown. Add crushed ginger and garlic. Saute again nicely. Add the prepared masala paste. Saute nicely for a few minutes. Add required amount of salt and kokum soaked in water and water. Bring it to boil. Then add the fish pieces. Close the vessel with a lid and cook till it is done and gravy becomes thick. (20 to 25 mins on a low flame).
Serve it with rice or kappa or puttu.

note

 make sure that fish pieces do not get broken in the process. it will be safe to rotate the pan to make sure that fish and masala is mixed well. It tastes better the next day.
You can adjust the quantity of chili powder as your taste preferences.
.you can  use Kashmiri chili powder and chili powder.
